Chinese will spend more time staring at their cellphone than watching TV

Ever since the mobile plethora in China, the Chinese people are incrementally spending more time on their mobile screens than they are staring at TV screens. The irreversible trend will peak this year when eventually, according to an eMarketer forecast, for the first time, Chinese adults will spend more time with their mobile devices than with TV.

The eMarketer report says that in 2018 Chinese adults will spend around 2 hrs 39 mins on mobile devices per day, accounting for almost 42% of their daily media time. While their TV watching time will slide to 2 hrs and 32 mins a day, or almost 40% of daily media time.

The report attributed the mobile usage growth to a mobile video surge resulted from the concerted effort by both big platforms such as Alibaba, iQiyi, Tencent and short video startups such as Kuaishou, Douyin that drive viewership and subscriptions.
