CHINA BRIEF | ByteDance goes on Singapore hiring spree, poaching Facebook and Google employees

Beijing-based startup ByteDance has launched a recruitment drive in Singapore for over 100 new employees, as it plans to set up its new advertising network center in the city-state, which will be the base for ByteDance’s Southeast Asian market push, Tech in Asia reported.

The owner of short-video apps TikTok and Douyin currently still has 34 open positions on its career portal in Singapore, from software engineers, computer vision scientists, to global strategic trade relations personnel. According to Tech in Asia, ByteDance was advertising for 68 positions, while TikTok opened 42 job vacancies in Singapore.

Last December, KrASIA reported about ByteDance’s intentions to establish a global headquarter outside of China. Singapore was named as one of the potential locations, besides London, and Dublin, in a move intended to shake off the “Made in China” label amid the increasingly heightened scrutiny from the US.

ByteDance also made Singapore the global headquarters for office collaboration platform Lark, which has a domestic version called Feishu.

According to the Tech in Asia report, ByteDance has also poached top talents from tech companies that are already based in Singapore for their Asia-Pacific operations, such as Alphabet’s Google, Facebook, and Grab.

This article is part of KrASIA’s “China Brief” section, where KrASIA’s reporters will provide quick daily updates about the tech ecosystem in China.
